Will Canelo Alvarez Be “The One” to Finally Defeat Floyd Mayweather?

The super welterweight world championship pay-per-view showdown between Canelo Alvarez and the undefeated Floyd Mayweather will take place on Saturday, September 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In spite of facing the most important fight of his career, Alvarez displays the collectedness of a man who is never worried.

Canelo, a redhead with matinee idol looks, is the No. 1 boxing attraction in Mexico. He is on the cusp of joining the same club as Mexican boxing legends like Carlos Zarate, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales.

What’s at stake? A victory over Mayweather would cement Canelo’s legacy as one of the all-time greats in Mexican boxing history.

Alvarez received advice from fellow Mexican boxer and mentor, Oscar De La Hoya, who lost to Mayweather in 2007, could give Alvarez the edge to defeat Mayweather. “Floyd is a different kind of fighter and this is a different kind of fight,” Alvarez said. “For every fight there’s a game plan. But that game plan can go out the window in the first round. So you have to have a Plan B and a Plan C. And that is what we’ll work on.”

“For one thing, youth is on his side,” De La Hoya said of the 23-year-old Canelo, who hails from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. “But the real advantage will be the intelligence. People will also be surprised with his speed.”

Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez Booked for September 14th

Can Mayweather vs. Canelo Top Boxing's All-Time PPV Record?

Rated as the best pound-for-pound boxer and five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (44-0, 26 KO) and junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO) are still more than two months away from meeting in the ring, but they're already shattering records. Tickets for their September 14th mega fight in Las Vegas sold out in the blink of an eye, and the fight has broken the all-time live-gate record for a boxing event.

Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, known as El Canelo, Alvarez is an undefeated 22-year-old Mexican professional boxer in the Junior Middleweight division. Álvarez started boxing at 13 years old, after watching his older brother Rigoberto Álvarez's debut as a professional boxer. In 2004 he won the silver medal at the Junior Mexican National championships, held in Sinaloa. Even though Álvarez turned professional young, he had 20 amateur bouts under his belt. At 22, Canelo is going to let whatever happens happen, responding with youth and an imaginative spirit with the 36 year old Mayweather having to adjust to Canelo’s youthful eagerness. “I am 22-years-old and I'm not worried about money at the moment because I have a long future ahead of me. This fight is about pride, and winning, because I want to be one of the best boxers in history and this is the opportunity to reach that goal," Canelo said.

According to ESPN.com, the fight is guaranteed to generate at least $18.6 million dollars in total ticket sales. That's more than enough to supplant the 2007 bout between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya, which generated just over $18.4 million dollars. Canelo and Mayweather might top the all-time PPV revenue mark, as the fight is priced at $65 standard definition and $75 in HD, so even if they don't get the 2.4 million buy mark, they could top the revenue mark, which is around $134 million domestically.

Marquez's fight future rests on his wife after Pacquiao success

He may have knocked out eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao during their recent bout in Las Vegas but if Juan Manuel Marquez wants a fifth fight against the legendary Filipino he'll need to get permission from his wife.

The Mexican stunned the world of boxing by knocking out Pacquiao in the sixth round of their welterweight contest earlier in December.

It was the first time the 39-year-old has claimed victory in four fights against Pacquiao, who many pundits regard to be the finest pound-for-pound fighter the sport has ever seen.

But with fans clamoring for a fifth bout, Marquez says the only way it will become a reality is if his wife allows him to renege on his promise to retire whatever the outcome of the fourth.

"I made a promise and I know that promises are debts," Márquez said in an interview with CNN en Español.

"I don't see a case to fight again but logically he wants a chance," he added of talk that he and Pacquiao could square off for a fifth time.

Marquez's emphatic victory offered the Mexican some redemption after he failed to win any of the first three fights against Pacquiao.

Their first encounter in May 2004 ended in a draw, while the Filipino took a points victory at the conclusion of their rematch four years later.

Pacquiao to fight Marquez in Mexico? Tax breaks could be reason

Why did Manny Pacquiao announce recently that he is willing to go to the lion’s den and face Juan Manuel Marquez in Mexico City?

Although Pacquiao hasn’t decided on who to fight on Nov. 10, the Filipino actually has no other choice but to pick among Marquez and Timothy Bradley, the unbeaten American fighter whose victory over him almost two weeks ago remains shrouded in controversy and mystery.

A few days ago, the Mexican media reported that initial talks have commenced for a possible Pacquiao-Marquez showdown in Mexico City.

Representing Marquez is Mexico’s premier promoter, Fernando Beltran, who has close ties with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc.

A source told InterAKTV that Pacquiao stands to save a lot of money because he won’t be taxed if he struts his stuff on Mexican soil.

“Millions [of dollars] in taxes,” said the boxing source. “That’s a lot.”

If Pacquiao performs in Sin City, whether it’s Bradley or Marquez, his purse will be subject to taxes.

But taking the fight away from Las Vegas is the biggest stumbling block in bringing it to Mexico.

Las Vegas has unlimited resources and can match — or exceed — an offer from Mexico City.

Arum said a clearer picture of what’s on the horizon should be known next week when he and Pacquiao reunite in Los Angeles.

Canelo vs Lopez Video: Los Angeles Press Conference (Via BadLeftHook.com)

Canelo Alvarez will meet Josesito Lopez on September 15 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, live on Showtime, and recently the two fighters were at a press conference in Los Angeles to make the fight official.

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya even continued to rather ridiculously refer to this as a "historical" fight, mostly because they promised to "make history" with this fight, which fell apart when they got down to their fourth (at least) choice for Canelo's opponent, and then didn't get the fight on CBS, which they tried to do, as well.

Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO) is an enormous favorite right now against Lopez (30-4, 18 KO), in large part because most see this as Lopez jumping from 140 to 154. Lopez fought as a welterweight in June and did break Victor Ortiz's jaw and win that fight, so he's shown he can pull a big upset, but even then he weighed in at 144¾ for the fight, and while yes, he won the fight emphatically, he was without question the visibly smaller man in the ring. That could be even worse against Alvarez than it was against Ortiz.

On the flipside, it's still a major fight, because Canelo is a major star. But I can't help but feel like this fight is being made almost entirely out of spite. HBO has a legit PPV attraction in Chavez Jr vs Martinez that same night, and that fight, which is being held at the Thomas & Mack in Vegas, is said to be moving tickets very well. Canelo-Lopez is going to take a ticket hit because it's not the same level of fight.

But it should still do a good number on Showtime, even with many watching the HBO PPV. If everyone has even a shred of respect for their audience, they will at least go out of their way to put the Canelo fight itself on before the Chavez-Martinez fight. I could see a lot of people ordering the PPV and being willing to skip part of the undercard to watch Canelo. And no matter how you slice it, boxing fans are being forced to choose between two notable events, and that's just not good for anyone.

Will 'Canelo' Alvarez, J.C. Chavez Jr. or both fight Sept. 15?

They’ve drawn lines in the sand before, and rival promoters Bob Arum of Top Rank and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions are digging in again.

Their divide is over  Sept. 15 -- Mexican Independence Day -– in Las Vegas, with two of the most popular Mexican fighters in boxing now scheduled to fight on conflicting cards.

Schaefer on May 5 announced that his fighter, 21-year-old world super-welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, would headline his first pay-per-view on Sept. 15 at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Alvarez's opponent, Paul Williams, days later was paralyzed in a motorcycle crash. A second opponent, James Kirkland, later withdrew, citing ongoing discomfort with a surgically repaired right shoulder and unhappiness with his pay.

Last week, Golden Boy’s Schaefer announced  Staples Center headliner Victor Ortiz of Ventura will fight Alvarez as long as Ortiz emerges victorious and healthy against Riverside’s scrappy Josesito Lopez on  Saturday night.

Showtime has agreed to televise Alvarez’s fight on pay-per-view, and hype it with a four-episode preview series concentrating on the participants.

On Saturday night, however, Arum announced minutes after world middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. defeated Andy Lee by seventh-round technical knockout at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, that Chavez (46-0-1, 32 knockouts) would participate in a super-fight against Argentina’s Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KOs) on Sept. 15 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
