Rafa Marquez May Be Dropped by New York Red Bulls

Mexican National Team captain and central defender Rafa Márquez is in jeopardy of losing his starting position with the New York Red Bulls.

Márquez was suspended by coach Hans Backe for the 2-0 Major League Soccer League win over the Portland Timbers on Saturday night for critical comments he made about his teammates last week.

Within a span of eight games, the Red Bulls recorded shutouts in games that Márquez missed; he was sidelined for the team's 1-0 victory over FC Dallas on Sept. 17 due to yellow-card accumulation.

Yellow Cards Force Rafa Márquez to Sit Out New York Red Bulls' 1-0 win at FC Dallas

The Mexican National Team captain and central defender did not play in the New York Red Bulls' 1-0 win at FC Dallas because of yellow-card accumulation. The victory snapped an eight-game league winless streak that went back to a 5-0 triumph over Toronto FC on July 6. Márquez is expected to start against Real Salt Lake at home on Wednesday and the Portland Timbers at home on Saturday.

Rafa Márquez Shines, but New York Red Bulls Still Struggle

Mexican captain and central defender Rafa Márquez set up the equalizing goal for the Red Bulls in their 2-2 draw at the New England Revolution. Márquez started the scoring sequence by switching the field of attack from the right to the left side to midfielder Joel Lindpere. The Estonian international sent a pass toward the goal that bounced off Jamaican international midfielder Dane Richards and into the net in the 87th minute.

Rafa Márquez Remains a Central Defender on Struggling NY Red Bulls

The central defender went the full 90 minutes for the struggling New York Red Bulls (6-6-13) in their 2-2 home draw with the lowly Chicago Fire (2-7-14). It appeared Márquez was out of position for Chicago's first goal (the second was scored eight minutes later). The Red Bulls have a six-game winless streak (0-3-3) and haven't won since a 5-0 home win over the New England Revolution on Saturday. They haven't won in New England in almost a decade (2002).
