Boxing still thrives in Mexico. Boxing is Mexico’s second biggest sport, behind soccer. In the United States, boxing fans have to find matches on pay-per-view to enjoy the sport, while in Mexico boxing is broadcasted every Saturday on national television.
Romanza Gym in Mexico City has been the home to more champion boxers than any other gym in the world. The gym’s owner, Ignacio Beristain, was recently inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York. Ignacio Beristain has 22 world championships under his coaching belt.
Mexican boxers have huge fan followings in their home country and are known for their grit, vigor and determination. One of the most famous Mexican boxers, Juan Manuel “Dynamite” Marquez, still trains at Romanza Gym and holds 3 world championships as a featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight.
Marquez, 37, is nearing the end of his career but will return November 12 for a fight against his rival Manny Pacquiao. This will be the third fight for Marquez and Pacquiao: the first ended in a tie where many fans thought Marquez should have won. The second fight ended in a controversial split decision that favored Pacquiao and Marquez hopes to take the third this November. The spirit, the drive to win, and the never give up attitude is what makes all of the famous Mexican boxers unique to the sport.
