Latin American and Caribbean nations on Thursday won one gold medal, two silvers, and two bronzes in the 26th World University Games, held in the city of Shenzhen.
That medals total was the highest won on a single day of competition, led by the gold that went to Mexican diver Paola Espinosa, in the 10-meter platform event.
Mexico also added a bronze by taekwondoka Ollin Medina, who came in third to Chinese Jingjing Zhang and Iranian Masha Mardani, respectively.
Jamaica added a silver, which went to track and field athlete Peter Matthews, in the 400 meter event, where he set a personal best of 45:62, following Hungarian Marcell Deak-Nagy (45:50).
Brazil won a silver thanks to swimmer Joao Gomes Junior (27:60) following Newzealander Glenn Snyders (27:37), in the 50-meter breaststroke.
Ecuador won its first medal of the games thanks to a bronze won by athlete Cristian Andres Chocho Leon (1:24.44) in the 20-kilometer march, following Russians Andrey Krivov (1:24.15) and Mikhail Ryzhov (1:24.26), respectively.
