Herculez Gomez opens Liga MX season in Mexico with a goal



When discussing front-line American players absent from the current U.S. camp because they are busy with big clubs beyond MLS, the tendency is to think only of the name names in England, German, Italy and elsewhere in Europe.

Of course, there is one sure-fire roster inclusion who earns his club pay down in Mexico.

When U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann names his 18- or 20-man roster for that final round World Cup qualifier opener Feb. 6 in Honduras, count on Herculez Gomez being there.

In 2012, Gomez moved from way back in the pack to perhaps No. 2 on Klinsmann’s list of forward selections, right behind Clint Dempsey. Clearly, we would surely call 2012 a big, honkin’ success of a year for the Santos Laguna forward.

Looks like 2013 is starting just like the previous year ended. Gomez scored an important goal for his team Sunday as Santos drew 1-1 with San Luis to open the Liga MX season.
