Dominick Cruz Enjoys Cruising in a Honda Civic | Via 5thround.com

Nick Diaz might be desperately trying to upgrade his rickety old Honda, but UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz is perfectly happy cruising around town in his Civic.

Cruz has stumbled upon greater riches since donning Octagon gold, but he fully understands money doesn’t grow on trees – especially in a sport as fickle as mixed martial arts. As far as Cruz is concerned, a dollar saved is a dollar earned.

“You’re always one fight away from being forgotten, in my opinion,” Cruz stated on Monday’s media call. “The only thing people remember is your last fight. So it’s very hard to go out there and buy all kinds of stuff, be driving this awesome car, have all kinds of stuff going on and have all these bills.

“I’d rather just keep my life the way it is. I live very cheap. That way, God forbid, I bust my eye socket and I can’t fight for a year, I don’t have a stack full of bills I gotta pay without income coming in … I’m driving a Honda Civic.”

Cruz was promoted to the big leagues after the collapse of World Extreme Cagefighting at the end of 2010. His WEC bantamweight title was immediately upgraded to a UFC crown, but outside of that, it’s been business as usual for “The Dominator.”

“I really didn’t change my life that much,” Cruz admitted. “The only thing that has changed is that I get recognized a little bit more because I’m fighting on the biggest stage on the planet, being the UFC for MMA. And [I get] a little bit more respect here and there. God has blessed me, so I am happy with it.”

Cruz defends his title against Demetrious Johnson at “UFC on Versus 6.” If he protects his belt anything like he does his bank account, then Johnson is in for world of trouble this Saturday.

Diego Sanchez calls hand injury "blessing in disguise" following UFC 135 withdrawal

Diego Sanchez's ascent in his second go-around inside the framework of the UFC welterweight division has been temporarily derailed.

The 29-year-old Sanchez (23-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) was set to face former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes (45-8 MMA, 18-6 UFC) at UFC 135 event, which takes place Saturday at Denver's Pepsi Center.

That was until a single right-handed punch connected to the top of his sparring partner's head and instantly changed his trajectory.

"I thought maybe I jammed it," recently Sanchez told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). "As soon as I took my glove off at the end of the round I could see my bone moving. Right there on the pointer finger, that metacarpal on the pointer finger, was just completely cracked in half. Fortunately, I'm not going to need surgery."

In fact, the hand is expected to heal fully in four to five weeks. It's more of a momentum killer than anything. Sanchez is fresh off consecutive "Fight of the Night" performances against Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann.

"I look at it like a blessing in disguise," Sanchez said. "Right now, all I can do is work my knees, kicks, and my left hand and my conditioning. I can run hard. There's still a lot I can do and still continue to get better through this injury. That's something I've done throughout my career, through every little injury. There's always something, and you work your way around it, and continue to get better."

While Josh Koscheck fills in against Hughes at UFC 135 this weekend, Sanchez awaits a new fight date and a fresh opponent. It shouldn't be too difficult to find him a quality challenger. The welterweight division remains alive and well.

"I'm confident the UFC will give me a good fight no matter what," Sanchez said. "I'm ready to take on any opponent they put in front of me."

Dana White talks Nick Diaz no-show, Condit replacement, Overeem, Fox and more

Heavy MMA caught up with Dana White after Wednesday's UFC 137 press conference in Las Vegas to talk about Nick Diaz being removed from the fight against Georges St-Pierre, Carlos Condit's reaction to getting the new title shot, Alistair Overeem, and the Fox deal.

Nick Diaz was a no-show at the UFC 137 press conference in Las Vegas - just like he was a no-show at the press conference in Toronto the day before. Dana White decided enough is enough and axed him from the card, giving Carlos Condit the title shot in his place.

No Sign Of Nick Diaz At UFC 137 Press Conference (via fightline.com)

Nick Diaz was a no-show for a press conference Tuesday afternoon in Toronto to hype the upcoming UFC 137: St-Pierre vs. Diaz pay-per-view.

Diaz, who relinquished his Strikeforce welterweight title to move to the UFC to face champion Georges St-Pierre, has a history of not interupting his training for press events.

St-Pierre was upset and frustrated by the no-show from Diaz, and the normally quite relaxed GSP might be in for another day of anger.

An event planned for today in Las Vegas is expected to feature both GSP and Diaz, but UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta tweeted on Twitter earlier today asking where Diaz is.

"Anyone know where nick diaz is?" Fertitta wrote.

Cesar Gracie, the head trainer and manager for Diaz, told MMAjunkie.com on Tuesday that Diaz regrets missing Tuesday's event and promises he will show in Las Vegas.

"Nick is going to be there (Wednesday), and we'll go from there," Gracie said.

Malki Kawa, the manager for welterweight contender Carlos Condit, tweeted, "I know where Carlos Condit is if you need a replacement ;) we're an hour away. We'll sell the fight."

Condit is slated to meet B.J. Penn in a bout to determine the next challenger to either St-Pierre or Diaz in the co-main event on October 29.

Matt Hughes looks to stop Diego Sanchez at UFC 135

Although Matt Hughes (45-8 MMA, 18-6 UFC) is giving up eight years of age to Diego Sanchez (23-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC), don't expect Hughes to take Sanchez lightly. However, in a recent interview with mmajunkie.com, Hughes explains he feels comfortable with his place in the UFC and is no longer concerned about who he fights.

"I'm at that stage right now where I'm taking interesting fights," Hughes said at a recent UFC Fight Club Q&A session. "I had the belt. [St-Pierre] has beaten me two out of three times. Nobody wants to see a fourth fight between him and I, so I'm just going to take it easy, fight interesting fights, and that's it."

While Sanchez's accomplishments don't yet stack up to to the former champ's impressive résumé, Hughes had no hesitation in accepting the matchup.

"What I like about it is I think it's a fight the fans will want to tune into," Hughes said. "Diego, mentally he's tough. He's going to come to fight all three rounds. You don't have to worry about Diego going away after the first or second round.

"Striking, takedowns, submissions, he's pretty equal all the way around. Of course, if he gets on top, that's where he really shines. I just think it's a good matchup."

Hughes is experiencing a bit of a career resurgence after rattling off wins over Ricardo Almeida, Renzo Gracie and Matt Serra. However, this matchup with Diego might be his toughest yet. Sanchez is coming off from an absolute battle with Martin Kampmann. Not to mention, Diego has two straight "fight of the night" bonuses (Kampmann and Thiago) and will be looking to keep the streak going.

Hughes vs Sanchez is set for September 24th at UFC 135 in Denver, Colorado.

UFC sends Dominick Cruz and Charlie Brenneman to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Philadelphia

Being a UFC fighter is tough.

Being a kid from the streets of Philly is tougher. That's why Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) had a greater mission when it arrived in "The City of Brotherly Love" for its UFC 133 pay-per-view event on August 6 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

ESPN.com has the details:
Dominick Cruz, the UFC bantamweight champion, and Charlie Brenneman, a fast-rising welterweight contender, were chauffeured into Wilson Park Apartments Complex on Friday morning to sample life inside a different cage. They were preaching from the fight gospel, and the message was heard by some 150 teenagers.
It was self-evident that the likes of Cruz and Brenneman, who might not be the ideal role models for the kids who sat -- pretty patiently -- listening and asking questions, have the facility to engage with alacrity. Their effect on the real role models -- the 16- and 17-year-old "senior" kids in the project -- is what really counts from this visit.
The summer camp is run by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Philadelphia. Wilson Park is one of 11 units in the city of Philadelphia. The kids who come during the schools’ summer break are between 7 and 18 years old.

UFC agrees to two-year deal with FOX Sports Latin America

By MMAjunkie.com Staff on Aug 04, 2011 at 3:35 pm ET

The Ultimate Fighting Championship continues to expand its presence in Latin America.

The UFC today announced a new two-year partnership with FOX Sports Latin America that calls for 24 live events per year, beginning with this Saturday's UFC 133 event.

The new deal, which includes programming on the Latin American versions of FOX Sports, FOX Sports+ and FOX Sports HD, makes the UFC brand available to 29 million Latin American households in 19 Spanish-speaking countries.

"We felt the time was right to expand in Latin America," UFC president Dana White stated in today's release. "We launched with Globosat in Brazil in 2008 and saw the popularity for the sport to explode. We knew we had millions of fans in Latin America and wanted to give them access to content and programming developed exclusively for them."

In addition to the live events, FOX Sports Latin America will also feature taped and archived content including the highlight-based series "UFC Guerreros."

"We are excited to be able to bring our viewers a front-row seat to the fastest growing sport in world," FOX Sports exec Patrick Ilabaca stated. "Through our agreement with UFC, mixed martial arts fans throughout Latin America will for the first time be able to watch live UFC events exclusively on FOX Sports, which were traditionally only available on Pay-Per-
View."

FOX Sports boasts its position as the "No. 1 sports pay television network in the region." In addition to the new programming, FOX Sports Latin America has also launched a dedicated UFC page on the network's official website.

With the new deal in place, the UFC now broadcasts to 132 countries worldwide, reaching 597 million homes in 21 different languages. White said the company soon hopes to reach the 1 billion-home threshold.
