After his win against Zbik, many felt the next step for the undefeated Chavez would be Miguel Cotto (36-2-0). However, according to boxingscene.com, Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum, said that will not be the case.
"Cotto is not going to fight Julio Cesar Chavez this year, because again, Chavez is not ready," said Arum. During the interview with boxingscene, Arum went on to explain, "Chavez is going to need some more developmental fights before he can get into the ring with somebody like Miguel Cotto."
I disagree with Arum on this decision. Yes, Cotto is a challenging and dangerous fighter, but Chavez has great power and quickness. I was impressed with Chavez's defeat over Zbik and thought he showed world class potential. Also, with a trainer like Roach, I am confident they could put together a winning game plan.
