"When you think about the most well-supported sports teams in America, chances are you’ll think of teams like the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Lakers or even the Dallas Cowboys. One team the average American sports fan wouldn’t necessarily think of is one that isn’t American at all, yet they're packing stadiums across the country like nobody else."Ives Galarcep, from FOX Sports, offers a great article on Mexico's fan base. He explains that El Tri faithful have always been the loudest supports of Mexican soccer clubs, yet this year seems different.
"Major support from the nation’s large Mexican community is nothing new, but this current Mexico team has sparked an even larger and more passionate response because of the team’s impressive qualities. Featuring Manchester United star Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, Mexico is riding the boost of a loaded generation of talent that could push Mexico to world power status in the upcoming World Cup cycle."That's right, world power status. I have been saying this for months, but this current national team feels unique, they feel unstoppable. Galarcep speaks about how even with headline making removal of five players from the roster, the squad barely seemed to phased. This team seems to be playing with more passion, more enthusiasm, I argue the fan base has a lot to do with it.
Mexican fans have been with El Tri every step of the way. Filling out stadiums in Dallas, Charlotte, New Jersey and Chicago. The massive 71,000-seat facility will be filled with fans in green who sold out the event a week ago. Galarcep asks his readers if such a following is added pressure for Mexico's national team. Even though 71,000 is a huge number, 82,000 is even bigger, which was the estimated game-time size crowd in Dallas. They ran through their competitor in spectacular fashion and have showing more flash in each game since.
No matter what goes down on Wednesday night, the biggest soccer game since the World Cup will be taking place at the Rose Bowl. Hopefully we can see Mexico truly shine in a USA vs. El Tri final. In any case, seeing such a passion for these players is inspiring and I look forward to their display Wednesday night.
