Mexico cruises in advancing to quarterfinals

Despite being shorthanded following five players testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, Mexico crushed Costa Rica 4-1 on Sunday night. While many watched the Dallas Mavericks win their first NBA title, El Tri continued on their championships hopes playing in front of a sold out crowd at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. The game got off to a blistering start as Mexico was on the attack out of the gate and they never let off the gas. Andrés Guardado scored twice during a first-half assault that gave Mexico a 4-0 advantage. Rafael Márquez and Pablo Barrera also scored before the break. However, Mexico's Gold Cup shutout run came to an end in the 68th minute when Marcos Ureña scored for Costa Rica. Prior to Costa Rica's goal, Mexico was riding a 14-0 goal differential and averaging 3.75 goals per game, the highest goal average in the Gold Cup in nearly a decade.

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez also came up scoreless for the first time in the Gold Cup, although the ManU striker had several chances to tally. El Tri also didn't need Giovani dos Santos who had a sold defensive showing. Mexico will face Guatemala or Canada in the quarterfinals.
