For 47 minutes all of Mexico and a GIANT portion of U.S. soccer fans held their breath as El Tri took a 1-0 deficit to Guatemala. With embarrassing post match headlines already being sketched, many soccer reporters were about to write their breakdown of the biggest upset in the Gold Cup in a decade. Enter Javier Hernandez, when in the 66th minute scored his tournament-best sixth goal to lift Mexico into the lead, you could have heard the collective sigh of relief from CONCACAF officials.
So fortunately, Mexico is set to face Honduras on Wednesday night. This game is already sold out and soccer analysts are calling for a competitive matchup. After last night's freak out, it is hard to say which Mexico we will see out on the pitch. Last night the world got to see what Mexico can do when facing adversity, which is to go to Chicharito of course. Hopefully, de la Torre bought Hernandez a limo ride back to the hotel after Chi pulled Mexico's embattled coach from the chopping block. I would assume El Tri got a serious wakeup call from Guatemala and will come out ready for Honduras.
