Heavyweight MMA Rankings: July 29, 2011 (via 8CountNews.com)

1. Cain Velasquez: The UFC Heavyweight Champion and undefeated in his mixed martial arts career. His next defense will be against Junior dos Santos in a fight that will be his biggest test to date.

2. Junior dos Santos: #1 contender for the UFC Heavyweight Championship. I see him taking out Velasquez and earning the Championship strap. His hands are too fast and his takedown defense is too sharp for the current champ.

3. Alistair Overeem: Now that he's out of the Strikeforce Grand Prix we won't get a good look at 'The Reem' against top talent. Unfortunately this may cause a drop for him in the rankings while his Strikeforce and UFC contemporaries are facing top of the heap competition.

4. Frank Mir: I think his recent wins put him in a perfect spot for a title shot. Sadly, the performances he's recently put on aren't exactly exciting. Perhaps with another fight he can get in there to face a championship contender. I know Mir is ranked quite highly on this list, but, it is my belief that when Mir fights a smart fight he is capable of defeating anyone underneath him on this list.

5. Fabricio Werdum: Easily the best jiu jitsu practitioner in the heavyweight division. With victories over Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio Silva and Alistair Overeem, Werdum is a definite threat to anyone inside the cage.

6. Shane Carwin: With Carwin's newfound cardio endurance, a victory over Brock Lesnar seems inevitable. His punching power and wrestling ability keep him in the top of the division with the best fighters in the world.

7. Josh Barnett: Known for his catch wrestling ability and brash attitude towards authorities in MMA, Barnett will take on Sergei Kharitonov in the next rounds of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.

8. Antonio Silva: Size matters and Silva has size. Lots of it. Silva will next face Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix after defeating Fedor Emelianenko.

9. Sergei Kharitonov: One of the best strikers in Heavyweight MMA. Kharitonov holds victories over Alistair Overeem, Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum and Semmy Schilt. Next facing Josh Barnett in the SF HW GP.

10. Brock Lesnar: Out of action with another bout of diverticulitis, many fans speculate that Lesnar will not return to MMA after his illness passes.
