With the sale of the Atlanta Hawks to Alex Meruelo, the NBA now has its first ever Latino owner. Combined with Arte Moreno who signs the paychecks of the Anaheim Angels, the number of Latino majority owners in American professional sports is a whopping two (Gloria and Emilio Estefan, J Lo, and Marc Anthony are minority shareholders of their respective teams). Nevertheless, Meruelo’s ascension into the elite fraternity of NBA owners is noteworthy as it is uncharted territory for a member the Latino community, and creates opportunity to contribute to the NBA’s global efforts to grow the game. As a fellow Cuban-American, I can’t help but smile that Meruelo made it to a position that I dreamed about occupying as a young boy (OK I’ll be honest, the dream hasn’t died). Unfortunately, Meruelo’s success is unlikely to register among Latino sports fans, and ultimately he is going to be judged solely for whether or not he keeps the team in Atlanta.
