Thanks to a standout defensive showing, Pumas gained the top spot in the Apertura after just edging out America – still winless under new coach Alfredo Tena – in Saturday's Clasico Capitalino. Luis Fuentes scored the only goal early in the second half, while results elsewhere ensured Pumas rose to the top after 11 games.
America found itself undermanned, missing key contributors Oscar Rojas, Angel Reyna and Daniel Montenegro, but still managed to test Pumas frequently, especially on set pieces. Rosinei nearly scored in the 38th an with an audacious attempt from about 40 yards out, but saw his effort cannon back off the bar.
However, Pumas managed to put a smile on the faces of the home fans in the 56th minute, albeit with a bit of luck. Francisco Palencia collected at the top of the area following a corner, and his shot defelcted right to Fuentes, who lofted the ball over Armando Navarrete for what would stand as the winning goal. Following the loss, America sits second from bottom with just 10 points, and fans reacted by calling for the departure of club president Michel Bauer.
