Santos edged closer to the top spot and denied Cruz Azul a chance to summit the table with a 1-0 win in Torreon. Santos is now unbeaten in seven games in all competitions, while Cruz Azul continues to search for solutions to its inconsistency.
The home side poured on the pressure in the early goings, and after being denied twice by good saves from Jose de Jesus Corona found a way through in the 21st minute. Christian Suarez found Oribe Peralta, who took a couple nifty touches, creating enough space for him to finish past Corona with the outside of his right foot.
After poor finishing marked the rest of the first half, some excellent defending prevented more goals in the second. Jorge Estrada made an excellent block off the line to deny Christian Gimenez, while Corona continued to frustrate Santos' attackers. At the final whistle, Santos emerged with a valuable three points despite not always looking comfortable, being let off at the hook at times by Cruz Azul's poor finishing.
