Santos continued its excellent form, beating surprise package Queretaro 3-1 to close in on the top spot. With the win, Santos now sits just a point behind joint leaders TIgres and Cruz Azul with a game in hand on both. Queretaro, meanwhile, finds itself just outside the playoff places.
Santos stunned the home fans almost from the get-go, taking a 2-0 lead within eight minutes. Carlos Quintero finished off a very nifty move from Santos from close range, with the mazy dribbling of Daniel Ludueña to thank. Just a minute later, Oribe Peralta, credited with the assist on the first goal, had Santos' second as Quintero turned creator. The Ecuadorian's through ball found the Queretaro defense flat-footed, leaving Peralta to make his run and coolly finish.
Queretaro was handed a lifeline in the 25th minute after a good spell of pressure when Carlos Zamarripa was tripped up just inside the area by Peralta. Michel Vazquez converted with a powerful effort and halve the deficit. The goal breathed life into Queretaro, but it could not grab a second in large part thanks to Oswaldo Sanchez, recently recalled to the Mexican national team.
Just after Israel Martinez had missed a great opportunity to equalize, Santos rewarded the hard work of its goalkeeper with an insurance goal. Carlos Morales curled a free kick over the ball, leaving Liborio Sanchez with no chance to save and extending Santos' winning streak to four games.
