2012 has been a great year for Serigo “Checo” Pérez as he continues to make headlines in Formula One. However, few may not know that Sergio has a younger brother, Antonio Pérez, who made waves in the Mexico Corona Series years before Checo’s debut in an F1 race car.
The NASCAR Mexico Corona Series (now named The NASCAR Toyota Series) is a NASCAR sponsored race league in Mexico. Much like the Sprint NASCAR series in the United States, the Mexico affiliate includes multiple races throughout the country that culminate in a year’s end championship. Many consider this annual sporting event is the most important stock car racing series in the country.
Established in 2004, the Corona Series was a joint venture between NASCAR and Mexican entertainment group OCESA, with the idea of developing stock car racing in Mexico, and fueling a transition from the country’s historically open-wheel racing fan base. From 2004 to 2006, the Corona Series grew considerably in the number of races, as well as in number of fans, drivers and sponsors.
In 2008 Corona Series, Antonio Pérez was unstoppable for team Escudería Telmex, as he won two of the fourteen races and finished in the top ten 8 times. Antonio amassed enough points that year to become the youngest champion of the Corona Series at 22 years old, an accomplishment that has yet to be matched.
Since the creation of the circuit, six drivers have won the Corona Series championship. The Telcel team is the most successful with four championships with Rafael Martínez being the eldest driver at 45 years old to take home the trophy. Only, Germán Quiroga has won the title in three occasions.
To the date three women are started a Corona Series race with driver Mara Reyes scoring a pole position in her first race. Two drivers, Jorge Goeters and Scott Riggs, have raced both NASCAR Corona Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in the United States.
Fans of Antonio and Sergio Pérez can find both racers competing on the track. Antonio is still active in stock car and Checo just finished second place in the Malaysian Grand Prix. Mexico continues to build their NASCAR fan base, as a new speedway in Chihuahua is scheduled for inauguration in early 2012.
