UFC president Dana White has had his say on the controversy surrounding Floyd Mayweather Jr's win over Victor Ortiz at the weekend, labeling the performance of referee Joe Cortez the "worst ref'n I have ever seen in boxing, ever".
Mayweather's unbeaten record stayed intact on Saturday when he knocked Ortiz out in the fourth round, but the killer blows came when Ortiz was not defending himself. Referee Cortez was docking the fighter a point for headbutting, but Mayweather took full advantage of his rival's gloves being lowered, smashing him with a brutal left hook/straight right combination.
Much has been made of Mayweather's antics in the aftermath to the fight, with the American defending his actions, stating that a fighter has to protect himself at all times inside the ring. Even Ortiz did not seem too angered by the controversy, confessing it was a hard lesson learned.
White watched in utter amazement as the entire scenario unraveled, insisting neither boxer was to blame for Cortez's inept communication. In White's eyes, the referee should have walked both men to their corners.
"Was that nuts or what?" White wrote on his personal Twitter account. "Dirty from both fighters and the most horrible refereeing I have ever seen in boxing or anywhere else.
"Ref never sent a fighter to a neutral corner to take a point. Especially after an intentional headbutt. That's why you have a ref!
"You can't blame the fighters. The ref is in there to stop that **** from happening. That is the worst ref'n I have ever seen in boxing, ever."
Mayweather has confirmed he is willing to offer Ortiz a rematch, although that would only hinder Amir Khan's plans to fight the legendary welterweight. Khan is set to pursue Mayweather in 2012, if he can beat Lamont Peterson in his next fight.
