Boxing News: Manny Pacquiao-Victor Ortiz fight proposed

Since a superfight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn't likely to happen, a member of Team Ortiz has suggested that Victor Ortiz battle the Filipino champion.

Joseph "Hoss" Janik, Ortiz’s strength and conditioning coach, told Boxingscene.com that it would be easier to arrange a Pacquiao-Ortiz fight rather than chase Mayweather.

“I don’t think Pacquiao and Mayweather are ever going to be able to come to terms because Mayweather dictates too much how he wants stuff to go. I don’t think that one is going to happen,” he said.

Ortiz recently lost his WBC welterweight title to Mayweather, who won by a controversial knockout.

Mayweather knocked out an unguarded Ortiz, who caught a couple of punches while apologizing for an intentional headbutt.

Mayweather won’t give Ortiz a rematch.

Janik said that since Pacquiao won't likely get a Mayweather bout, it might be a good idea to have the Filipino champion fight Ortiz instead.

“Freddie is a good friend of mine, Manny is a good friend of mine, I’d like to see that fight happen after the [Juan Manuel] Marquez fight, Pacquiao-Ortiz,” he said.

UFC PRESIDENT DANA WHITE SLAMS MAYWEATHER REF (via thenextgreatfighter.com)

UFC president Dana White has had his say on the controversy surrounding Floyd Mayweather Jr's win over Victor Ortiz at the weekend, labeling the performance of referee Joe Cortez the "worst ref'n I have ever seen in boxing, ever".

Mayweather's unbeaten record stayed intact on Saturday when he knocked Ortiz out in the fourth round, but the killer blows came when Ortiz was not defending himself. Referee Cortez was docking the fighter a point for headbutting, but Mayweather took full advantage of his rival's gloves being lowered, smashing him with a brutal left hook/straight right combination.

Much has been made of Mayweather's antics in the aftermath to the fight, with the American defending his actions, stating that a fighter has to protect himself at all times inside the ring. Even Ortiz did not seem too angered by the controversy, confessing it was a hard lesson learned.

White watched in utter amazement as the entire scenario unraveled, insisting neither boxer was to blame for Cortez's inept communication. In White's eyes, the referee should have walked both men to their corners.

"Was that nuts or what?" White wrote on his personal Twitter account. "Dirty from both fighters and the most horrible refereeing I have ever seen in boxing or anywhere else.

"Ref never sent a fighter to a neutral corner to take a point. Especially after an intentional headbutt. That's why you have a ref!

"You can't blame the fighters. The ref is in there to stop that **** from happening. That is the worst ref'n I have ever seen in boxing, ever."

Mayweather has confirmed he is willing to offer Ortiz a rematch, although that would only hinder Amir Khan's plans to fight the legendary welterweight. Khan is set to pursue Mayweather in 2012, if he can beat Lamont Peterson in his next fight.

Victor Ortiz, Boxing Champ, Media Darling & All Around Nice Guy (Via Fox News Latino)

Rarely do we get to see a champion-caliber fighter born before our eyes. Victor Ortiz seeks to change that.

The Mexican-American boxer appearing in the newest season of HBO’s “24/7” in the lead-up to his Sept. 17 bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr., and viewers are getting more than another supporting character in the seemingly never-ending sidestep between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. (Every season of the series -- save one -- has featured either Pacquiao or Mayweather.)

For the first time in the show’s 10 editions, fans are being introduced to a fighter who has the potential to headline future “24/7” series on his own.

Until now, we’ve been forced to watch a parade of past-their-primes and never-quite-made-its take on Mayweather and Pacquiao, as a bout between the two headliners was something promoters were never able to get done. With Ortiz, 24, fans have a chance to watch a star on the rise.

And Ortiz (and perhaps the producers at HBO) has done himself a tremendous service in the first two episodes of “24/7: Mayweather vs. Ortiz”.

To date, Mayweather has been shown calling his various members of “Team Mayweather” to the gym in the middle of the night, only to leave them waiting around for more than an hour before rolling in on his own time. He’s been depicted as the guy literally burning $100 bills. His one-on-ones apparently now need to include a requisite appearance by rapper 50 Cent. Maybe that’s one of the pitfalls of appearing so many times -- there’s only so much story to tell before the story simply becomes a production.

Mayweather has spent much of his five seasons of “24/7” telling the world how amazing he is. In the most recent episode, he said that “showing is better than telling.”
But the irony is, Ortiz may be doing more showing.

In the five months since Ortiz’s underdog upset of Andre Berto, Ortiz clearly isn’t just working to better himself as a fighter. He’s also emerged as a more-polished media personality, which is essential in a sport in which superstars often are as defined by their oversize personalities as their in-the-ring accomplishments.

Following the Berto bout, an elated Ortiz addressed the media, thanked everyone for coming out and was about to leave when someone suggested he might want to take questions from reporters at the news conference. He happily obliged.

The “24/7” version of Ortiz has become a media pro, even appearing on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight.” Ortiz comes off as well-spoken and insightful. He still conveys the confidence required to be the best in any sport, especially boxing, without the kind of cockiness that alienates Mayweather to all but his ardent supporters.

At the end of the four-episode arc, the only thing that really matters is who wins next week’s bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. However, it’s safe to say Ortiz already has won over a number of new fans.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER PRESS TOUR QUOTES

FLOYD MAYWEATHER, Six-Time World Champion in Five Weight Divisions

"I want to thank Victor Ortiz for stepping up to the plate and taking the test.

"I also want to say congratulations to Victor Ortiz. It's not easy to bounce back from a crucial loss. He bounced back like a true champion. I take my hat off to him.

"It's not all about the money. We all know I am going to make a ton of money. He [Ortiz] is going to make some good money too. I earned the right to make the money that I make.

"It starts here. Someone has to give him the opportunity to take the thrown. Why not let it be me?

"I don't duck or dodge anyone. This is for the fans. This is for the Pacquiao fans too. Do I want the Pacquiao fight? Absolutely, if that is what the fans want. I want to give the fans what they want, but I have to take it one step at a time. I cannot overlook Victor Ortiz.

"I don't want to hear about him [Ortiz] losing before. Right now he is the world champion. This is about me facing the world champion and fighting the best.

"My main focus is Victor Ortiz. I want to go to camp and dedicate myself.

"I want to give you excitement. I want to you to enjoy HBO 24/7.

"Anything can happen in the sport of boxing. If you beat me I want you to earn it. I don't want it to be tainted.

"This is not my last fight. Hopefully I can give you 10 more fights. I am closer to 40 than I am to 21, but I am not going anywhere.

"[To Ortiz] On Sept 17, I know you are going to be there and you are going to bring your best, and me and my team are going to bring our best.

"I have to have a lot of Mexican fans and I wouldn't be where I am today without them.

"I want to thank HBO. We have a relationship that goes far back. I am loyal to the company that I am with. I have been with HBO since the beginning of my career.

"My ultimate goal is to take the title from Victor Ortiz."

VICTOR ORTIZ PRESS TOUR QUOTES

VICTOR ORTIZ, WBC Welterweight World Champion

"I realize there is a lot of love/hate going on here. Tell me one thing I haven't already heard. People who loved me left me. I have been through a bunch of bull. I am facing one of the best fighters of all of time. That was a dream of mine since I was a little kid. I am not supposed to be here according to statistics.

"I am newly crowned [champion] and I am not ready to give that up.

"It's not a challenge when you are a champion.

"I have to thank my team for motivating me. The times they wanted me to go to war, I went to war. Mayweather is a beast, but I'm a monster. If Mayweather wants to box, I will box. If he wants to bang, I will bang.

"At the end of the day, I am walking away from this fight with that championship. I'll be damned if someone is going to take that away from me.

"This is a dream to me. I am not going to put this dream down. I am going to run with it as long as I can. I want to be like Bernard Hopkins and hold my title for as long as I can.

"I don't need to match Mayweather word for word. I am not a talker. I never have been. At the end of the day, we are going to have gloves and my punches are not as soft as my words.

"I am Mexican to the fullest and I am going to show the world how the Mexicans roll.

"I am tired of hearing that he is fighting Manny Pacquiao next. He is fighting me next!"

"On September 17, there is going to be a repeat of what happened on July 7, 1985, when Roger Mayweather fought Julio Cesar Chavez."

Watch some of the most exciting moments in the action-packed young career of Victor Ortiz, who is set to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September. This should prove to be a monumental fight as Mayweather is looking to cement his legacy (and possibly gear up for a meeting with PacMan). Ortiz could also make history if he is able to take out arguably the greatest boxer alive.

Mayweather Vs Ortiz Press Conference

This was arguably the most awkward press conference since Tyson vs. Lewis. I am not saying these two starting fighting (or biting) while at the podium, but both Ortiz and Mayweather provided some strange commentary. The press conference was weird because either fighter seemed as if they were roused from a deep sleep, then shoved at the podium to speak. In any case, check out the video I have provided and leave me a comment with your predictions or reactions.

Mayweather Vs Ortiz Press Conference

After a year off, Mayweather agreed to fight Victor Ortiz on September 17, 2011. The fight will be for Ortiz's WBC world championship. Ortiz, who is 10 years younger than his opponent, will be Mayweather's first challenger in 16 month. Mayweather had some strange comments for both Ortiz and Pac fans.

Nice fan promo for the Mayweather / Ortiz fight...but will this match happen?

Bob Arum Says Ortiz Not Ready for Mayweather!!

In yet another let down, Bob Arum has informed the media that Victor Ortiz is not ready for a fight with Floyd MayWeather. Here's what he said to Boxing Scene:

"I wouldn't have wasted or thrown a young guy like Ortiz into this match against Mayweather at this particular point in his career. I just wouldn't do it because there is no way that Victor Ortiz is ready to fight somebody like Floyd Mayweather. There just isn't."

Arum thinks the 24-year-old Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO's) should be making title defenses of his newly won WBC welterweight (147 lbs) world championship against lesser competition, not someone on the level of Mayweather (41-0, 25 KO's).

It is hard to imagine why Arum wouldn't want this fight, but it seems we will have to wait (again) for Mayweather to step out of his rabbit hole.
