Former Brazilian international goalkeeper and 2002 World Cup champion Dida considers the match between Mexico and Brazil - another edition of which is scheduled for the summer of 2013 - to be a “Clasico”.“Mexico has always been a tough rival to play against,” the long-time Milan goalkeeper told mediotiempo.com on Tuesday.
El Tri has traditionally proved to be one of Brazil’s largest stumbling blocks, not only in the region but worldwide. Mexico has beaten Brazil in a Confederations Cup final and two editions of the Gold Cup, as well as important age-level tournament finals at the 2005 U-17 World Cup and the Olympic Games earlier this year.
“Because of all those matchups, it’s a South American classic,” the Brazilian netminder said, taking slight geographic liberties.
The two sides will face off again at next year’s Confederations Cup in Brazil, where the CONCACAF champion and the home side have been drawn into the “Group of Death” with Japan and Italy.
When Mexico and Brazil renew their rivalry, it will constitute a rematch of the thrilling 1999 Confederations Cup final, in which El Tri beat the Selecao at the Estadio Azteca, 4-3.
